Master's in Sport Didactics

In conjunction with PHBern, the Institute of Sport Science offers an MSc in Sport Didactics (FDS), which aims to provide students with a foundation for subsequent work in teacher training in the field of Sport at universities of teacher education. The mono master's, worth 120 ECTS credits, is aimed at students with a bachelor's degree in Sport Science or at teaching staff with a bachelor's or master's degree from a university of teacher education.

The specialized Joint Master’s in FDS provides an in-depth insight into the subject sport didactics, especially with reference to physical education. The program includes courses offered by the Institute of Sport Science, the Institute of Educational Science and the Bern University of Teacher Education. In terms of content, the program is divided into two parts: 1) in-depth sport science courses and 2) studies in didactics in sport with a specialization in teaching & learning and didactics of sport. The standard period of study, including fulfillment of individual requirements, is approximately 6 semesters. The Joint Master’s in DoS is completed as a single subject (mono) master's with a master thesis (120 ECTS credits). To successfully complete the program, students must have a teaching diploma.

The joint master's study program in Sport Didactics is not a professional qualification. However, together with a teaching diploma at school level, it forms an excellent base for a future career in a university of teacher education. Subsequent to the master's program, suitably qualified master's graduates may continue to study Sport Science at doctoral level, focusing on sports didactics.
